Jane Herschlag

Deer at Dusk

Wearing winter’s taupe and gray they emerge from woods, cross to this side of the rock wall. Two, three, no, six graze on patches and leaf piles exposed by melted snow. Heads often raised, jaws stopped in mid-chew, they stutter-glance straight, left, right, ears pivoting, then go back to eating. I fret, that’s no way to dine. That’s how I sleep — nibbling bits of long ago days as the beast of childhood stalks and I lack camouflage. I wake fatigued.

Jane Herschlag's docu-poetry chapbook Bully In The Spotlight is published by Pudding House Publications. Her poems are also published in three anthologies and many university presses. Jane's subject matter is a braided combination of life's traumas and her awed appreciation of nature. A link to her site is on www.artbyherschlag.com
